Colonic Hydrotherapy (irrigation) Treatment

Why choose a Colonic?

Colonic hydrotherapy (irrigation) is a safe and gentle treatment that supports the cleansing of the body via the large intestine (colon).

People use colonics as a systemic detox programme, or to help provide them with much needed relief from functional bowel problems like constipation, IBS, bloating and diarrhoea. It is suitable for either gender and for anyone aged between 18 and 80+!

I also see clients who recognise the value of a colonic on a deeper level. They use this treatment as a way of ‘drawing a line’ after a challenging episode of life, viewing it as way to add closure by ‘letting it go.’ How our bodies hold on to emotions is well documented, and having a colonic is a great way to move through difficult feelings and experiences.

There are some conditions contra-indicated for treatment and these will be discussed during your consultation, but if there is something you’d like to check out first, just email me hello@ or read our FAQs about colonics.

What is involved?

The procedure involves the gentle infusion of warm filtered water into the rectum. The abdomen is massaged at stages throughout the colonic, which can help loosen impacted faeces and mucous which is then piped away in the wastewater. There is no physical exposure to the waste product by either the client or the therapist during the procedure. It is not painful and only slight cramping may occur when gas or waste has accumulated.

The number of treatments required will vary according to the individual and the condition being treated, and this is the sort of thing that would be discussed during your consultation.

What are the Benefits of Colonics?

The benefits of colonic treatments are far-reaching. Those clients who present with bowel-related symptoms are often amazed to find that seemingly unrelated problems are also resolved.

As no two people are the same, it is impossible to predict how you might feel following a course of treatment, but generally clients report the following improvements:

  • Improved and regular bowel function
  • Much more energy
  • Positive mental attitude
  • Improved sleep
  • Clarity of thought and vision
  • Smooth and toned skin
  • Pain-free periods
  • Improved digestion
  • Feelings of lightness and ease
  • Greater comfort day to day
  • A great sense of well being and lightness due to a diminished toxic load and improved elimination

Frequently Asked Questions about Colonic Treatments

Is a colonic good for you?
Yes a colonic can be very supportive of general health, not just for digestion related problems. After their colonic treatment, clients usually report feelings of lightness and ease, mental clarity and a sense of comfort in their body.
Does a colonic wash out all the good bacteria?
The colonic water will soften and wash away lots of dead bacteria that is part of the stool. It will remove everything that is available to be released and sometimes this includes what you might call ‘good’ bacteria, but the absence of these will be temporary.
In a cleaner bowel, the innate good bacteria that lives in the mucosal lining of the bowel get to proliferate unhindered. For the bacteria, after a colonic, it would be like having a party with no gate crashers.
What does a colonic feel like?
A colonic treatment is actually very gentle and can be quite soothing. Most people are worried about the speculum being inserted into their bottom, but honestly, it takes a couple of seconds and it isn’t actually that bad.
Clients feel a succession of gentle pressure building in their rectum, a bit like needing a poop, and then the pressure goes away again as the poop is released. This sensation repeats throughout the colonic procedure.
Is a colonic treatment safe?
Provided you choose a qualified and experienced colonic practitioner to perform your colonic treatment, it is a perfectly safe procedure. There are some conditions for which a colonic is not recommended, but a good practitioner will not put you at risk provided you are honest about the information you provide during your consultation.
What comes out during a colonic?
The colonic will help the body to release any accumulated waste like poop and gas. The waste matter is discreetly piped away into the sewer so there are no odours or mess. Oftentimes we see mucous released and occasionally undigested foods like sweetcorn, peas, or skins from tomatoes or peppers.
Is a colonic treatment good for IBS and Constipation?
A colonic treatment can be really helpful and supportive of IBS and constipation symptoms. It helps to relieve bloating and gas and stool build up, and it soothes the nervous system which is often the cause of the IBS or irregular bowel movements.
Does a colonic remove all the waste?
Every colonic treatment is different because every client is different, but the treatment will remove all waste that is available. Sometimes more than one treatment is required, but it will depend upon the client’s presenting condition. Obviously a chronically constipated client would likely benefit from several treatments to clear the backlog.
Where does the waste go in a colonic treatment?
It might depend upon the system that the therapist uses, but in closed systems, the waste matter is piped directly to the sewer so there is no exposure to anything unpleasant during the colonic treatment.
Is a colonic treatment suitable for everyone?
There are some health conditions for which colonics are not recommended. If you are in any doubt about your suitability, it would be sensible to check with the practitioner in advance of booking a colonic, just to make sure. Conditions like Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis are contraindicated for treatment.
Can you see what comes out during a colonic?
Yes. The practitioner will see what is released. Sometimes the client can watch too depending upon the layout of the room. If you’re curious, just ask. It is actually really helpful for clients to appreciate just how much waste is being removed. It’s affirming!
Do you ever see parasites released during a colonic?
It is possible to see worms but it is not common and not as prevalent as some Tik Tok videos would suggest!
How many colonic treatments will I need?
It is impossible to predict an answer to this without knowing the needs and presenting condition of the client, however, as an estimate, 1 – 3 treatments would be a reasonable suggestion.
Do you need to keep using the bathroom after a colonic?
The answer might depend upon how a client responded to the colonic treatment, but usually, once they leave the clinic, they might not need to poop for a day or two. Conversely, sometimes, they might visit the bathroom again that same day, but what is unlikely, is that they will be in and out of the loo every five minutes and be unable to leave the house.
How much does it cost?

Information on charges and availability can be found on the Appointments page.

Will I be okay to drive home afterwards?

Absolutely. You should be able to resume your normal day, but if you’ve never had a colonic before, it would be ideal if you can plan your first appointment on a day when you can take it easy afterwards.

Are there any negative side effects?

Unlike regular use of laxatives, which encourage bowel laziness and have many negative side effects, colonic hydrotherapy is not habit forming and in fact, improves muscle tone.

Can I have a colonic if I have my period?

Yes, it is absolutely fine to have a colonic whilst having your period. In fact, it can often help to reduce period cramps and discomfort.

What should I eat before and after I have my treatment?

You would be advised not to have a large meal before or after your colonic but do eat something. Try to avoid rich, fatty meals and alcohol after your treatment.

What do I have to wear?

Please just wear your normal clothing. You will be given a fleece to cover your body during the procedure to help keep you warm and maintain your dignity.
